about

TENCHPRESS returns when the world needs it least. Potemkin Music is a suite of sickly, insipid shanties. It’s raw in the same way a dog collar sore is raw, organic in the same way industrial sewage is organic.

From the grimy sizzle and chug of ‘Ten Best Vidic Tackles’, to the lurching robot nightmare of ‘Licky Licky Sticky Stamp’, to the kugelhammer pummel of ‘Go Get The Strimmer’, Potemkin Music has the craven feel of a battery-farmed album - alive, yes, but barely. It’s the sound of one little coarse fishy in love with the sound of plastic on metal and cartilage on wood.

Tales of paranoia and delight abound, populated with archetypes like the roaring dust storm, the inner sanctum of the misanthrope, the snake-eating mouse, and the jobsworth sublime, all in turn guided by the twin stars of Roberto Carlos and Patrick McGoohan.

With each song reusing, recycling, and borrowing melodic refrains, vocal cadences, and percussive elements from other songs on the album, and most of the percussion made by slapping, knocking, and hitting tables, cups, concertina cases, and bottles all found in Tench’s sunken wreck, the whole thing exists as its own little ailing ecosystem - a kind of sonic terrarium plebei.

Glance behind the fakery and the falsehood, and submerge yourself in Potemkin Music.
